Prepare a Profile. My version: Maybe just prepare? Basically, work on your internship elevator speech! Keep it short and sweet, about 1 or 2 minutes long, and highlight the positive aspects of your internship. Have Questions Ready. Have a set of questions ready to ask each person who comes up to the poster for after you give your elevator speech. You want to ask about their interests and see how they can align with what you have done in your internships — or outside of the internships too.

This campaign is a much needed effort by SGIM to increase medical student and resident interest in careers in General Internal Medicine while encouraging faculty to flaunt their pride in this important career choice. Fourteen GIM faulty gathered alongside students and residents to share their insights into why GIM was the right choice for their diverse career paths.
Students rotated through tables in 8-minute intervals to get a taste of all of the opportunities that await after training in GIM. Conversation abounded about the variety of opportunities and paths in GIM and each time “switch” was called, learners were reluctantly pulled away to start yet another in-depth conversation. At the end of the night, learners were given a chance to reconnect with faculty they met while rotating while also making connections to open up future mentorship and advising relationships.
Students were surprised not only by how many different careers were possible out of GIM, but also that some of the physicians they see leading the medical school and health system every day also practice in General Internal Medicine. For context, I have never been on a date with anyone I met online. As a year-old college senior, I in no way claim to be an expert in anything love, sex or relationship-related.
The intent of this social exercise was to explore firsthand some disparities between dating in real life to dating on new media. Match, the parent company that owns Tinder, OkCupid, Match. As freshmen, my friends and I giggled abashedly as we downloaded the app, only to swipe sarcastically, we affirmed. Before anyone will let you treat patients on your own, however, you have to go for more training to become the specific kind of doctor you want to be. The first year of it is called your intern year, or internship. The first few years of medical school involve learning the basics of the body and things that can go wrong with it, and rotating into short stints working alongside senior doctors and healthcare teams in the fields of primary and specialty care. You start sending applications to hospitals that offer training in that specialty, and some of them offer you a chance to come interview with them.
Meanwhile, the people you interviewed with are entering their top picks into the same system. They list those students in order, too — from their top choices on down. The nonprofit National Resident Matching Program combines all the ranked lists of about 34, soon-to-graduate medical students and recent grads , and all the directors of the programs that have about 30, residency spots open in any given year. This makes the matching process even more complicated.
But the system tries to accommodate them. Once the dust has settled on the matching process, medical schools get to download top-secret lists of which students matched to which residency program.
